The other star feature for '96 is the recent Oscar nominee "Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern." It received the NEFVF's September Productions Independent Film Award (as well as, a few months earlier, the best documentary award at the Sundance Film Festival). Husband-and-wife filmmaking team Steve Ascher and Jeanne Jordan of Cambridge spent more than four years working on this portrait of Jordan's family's struggle to hold onto its Iowa farm. That we see the farm-failure issue from the inside is a crucial factor in making the film as engrossing as it is; this is intimate, engaged filmmaking at its finest.
